The Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Office said Friday it has launched a $65 million investigation into the online sexual health clinics that operate as a facilitator of prescription drugs.
The clinics offer sexual health medications, including Viagra, Cialis, and Levitra, and they are not affiliated with the U. S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA), but they are the first licensed pharmacies that have taken the FDA’s new oversight, said Sheriff’s spokesman Rick Staggart.
“These clinics are an important part of a national chain of pharmacies,” Staggart said. “The drugs they are offered are safe, effective, and affordable to patients who need them.”
Cialis is the brand-name for a drug used to treat erectile dysfunction. It works by relaxing muscles and increasing blood flow to the penis, which can help men get and keep an erection, he said. Levitra is a prescription drug that’s also used to treat pulmonary arterial hypertension, or high blood pressure in the blood vessels of the lungs.
Drug companies such as Eli Lilly and Co. have been selling the drugs in their online stores, where they are known as online facilitators. The companies have not disclosed the pricing for the drugs.
Staggart said Friday the FDA will review the drugs and determine which one’s safe and effective for use in patients with erectile dysfunction. He said that could include Viagra, Cialis, and Levitra.
